Can You Live in the House During a Radon Test?
See what daily activities can continue during a radon test and which ventilation, handling, and construction changes can compromise the record.
Direct answer
Yes. You can normally live in the house during a radon test. For a short-term test, keep the required closed-house conditions, use exterior doors only for normal entry and exit, leave the device alone, and avoid unusual ventilation or construction activity.

Ordinary occupancy is expected
A residential measurement is not a requirement to vacate the home. Sleeping, cooking, bathing, and coming and going can continue unless the device instructions or a professional testing agreement says otherwise.
The important question is whether household activity changes airflow around the device or violates the stated test conditions. Normal occupancy and uncontrolled ventilation are not the same thing.
Operate permitted heating and cooling normally
EPA's transaction checklist allows normal operation of heating and cooling. During a test lasting less than one week, air-conditioning equipment should recirculate indoor air rather than deliberately bring in outdoor air.
Whole-house fans, window fans, or other equipment that exchanges large amounts of outdoor air can conflict with closed-house conditions. Write down uncertain equipment instead of guessing from its name.
Keep people and pets away from the device
Choose a location where the sampler will not be bumped, covered, unplugged, or moved. A note or simple boundary around the area can prevent accidental handling without changing room airflow.
If movement happens, record it. The laboratory or tester may need the timing and extent of the event to decide whether the result can be used.
Schedule around abnormal household events
Moving day, floor refinishing, major cleaning, open-house traffic, remodeling, and extended deliveries can make the measurement period unlike the planned protocol.
Start when conditions can remain stable. If an unavoidable event occurs, preserve it in the test record and obtain protocol-specific advice before relying on the number.

Quick answers
Do I have to leave my home during a radon test?
No. Ordinary occupancy is generally compatible with home testing when the device and required house conditions are maintained.
Can I cook and shower during the test?
Usually yes. Keep the device out of kitchens, bathrooms, humidity, heat, and drafts, and follow its instructions.
Can pets stay in the house?
Yes, but place the device where a pet cannot disturb, cover, or move it.
